April Fools! (Is it??)

Everybody loves a good April Fool’s joke. From “I lost my scholarship” to “We’re having a baby”, everbody’s got jokes on April 1st. NFT Twitter was full of jokes this year. One in particular really stood out.

A big-time digital artist we follow, Fvckrender, starting hinting at a drop of his works on NiftyGateways that night.

Anytime there is a Fvckrender drop, everyone gets excited. The value of his works can double to triple in minutes.

After some research we found the drop: FvckVictor. It seemed to be a collaboration with Victor Mosquera (also an incredibly popular artist).

Excited to discover the drop, we began searching NiftyGateway and discovered the drop to be password protected. Shortly after, Fvckrender posted a cryptic tweet stating ThankYouX (yet another big name in NFTs) possessed the password.

We knew getting in on this drop could be extremely valuable, both historically and financially. The hunt began.

Chris jumped into his Snuffy and ThankYouX Discords and began communicating with others seeking out the password, asking if anyone had any clues. Long story short, after a bit of digging around Twitter and Discord, he scored.

Much to his dismay, after unlocking the page this started to look like a clever April Fool’s joke. Fvckrender had thousands scrambling online to figure out a password to a drop that turned out to be nothing more than a homemade video, shot with an iphone, of him and Victor cupcaking around in a park.

Turns out we were right about this being a historic opportunity. As far as we can tell, this is the very first April Fool’s joke recorded on the blockchain. This is history, people!!

The drop went live at 6:30 PM and stayed open for exactly 10 minutes. In those 10 minutes 2,336 editions for minted at $50 per piece. That’s over $116,000 in ten minutes for selling a homemade iphone video.

Chris had a feeling there’d be more to it and per usual, he was right. As soon as the drop closed, Fvckrender announced via Twitter that anyone who minted the joke video was eligible to be entered into a drawing for a 1-of-20 artwork collaboration between himself and Victor Mosquera.

Shortly thereafter the lucky 20 were selected (not us) and those artworks are now being traded for over $10,000 per piece. That’s a $9,950 profit for anyone who entered and chose to sell their NFT.

We tell this tale to demonstrate how wild and exciting the NFT world is. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen a couple different artists make millions of dollars in the space of a few hours by minting unique and well thought out projects.

NFT artists are quickly becoming some of the wealthiest living artist in the world. That’s something you can’t ignore, and when there is that much money pumping into an industry you can be sure the innovation will continue with incredible speed.
