Don’t Be Left in the Dark

If you’re left in the dark on something, you don’t have all the information you should have. Just how the internet is the information highway of today, we believe that someday NFTs will be the preferred way to view this information in the future (much like social media today).

Chris spent some time with a woman in her 70’s last week who was visiting from another city. Imagine his shock and surprise to learn she didn’t know how to buy a plane ticket online to get home, and was relying on a family member to take care of that for her. She had a smart phone, but no idea of how to use it outside of calls and texts. She was 100% unaware of how to download, let alone use an app. Technology can be daunting and scary for those of us who are uninformed.

Last year when our NFT journey began there were so many aspects and processes of this that were just plain confusing. What’s the point in taking the time to learn all this? Web3 and NFTs are rapidly developing around us with all these new coders, designers, artists, etc. The money pouring into this space is unreal.

OpenSea, which is the largest NFT platform has jumped from doing about $28,000 per month in revenue to now having a total net worth of more than 14 billion. When that much money is being spent on something, the pace of innovation around it will be blinding.

If you’re interested in learning about NFTs, we have several great resources to recommend; OpenSea, Nifty Gateway, NBA Topshot (for sports fans), Rarible, SuperRare, and Foundation.

To interact with most of these sites requires the user to have a digital wallet. This is essentially a software program or app that allows you to make electronic transactions with another party, bartering digital currency or units for goods and services. There are all sorts of wallets, too many to go in to in a single blog post but, we personally prefer MetaMask.

The reason we like and use it is its navigability, security, the software is open source, it can handle virtually any digital currency, and it is a handy way to store and manage digital assets, such as NFTs.

One of the most important things to know when interacting with websites and your wallets is most of these artworks and collectables will be priced in cryptocurrency. The crypto of choice tends to be Ethereum. Some of these sites will do the conversion to US dollar for you, others do not, and you will be left with nothing but yourself and calculator app to figure it out.

Either way, know there is a learning curve to onboarding yourself to any of this. Every aspect can be a new rabbit hole to get lost in. We’re interested in cryptocurrencies and NFTs as works of arts where as some others may be more interested in the more technical creation side of things.

Either way, start learning now. We definitely don’t want to run into you 30 years down the road and catch you stuck in a city, unable to purchase a plane ticket, because they almost certainly will be NFTs in the future as well.
